Renewable Energy’s Growing Role in Data ⁣center Location

⁣ ⁤ Updated June 21, 2025

The role of power availability is now⁤ paramount in determining where new ‍data centers are built, according to Joshi. ‍He said ⁣the electrical grid ⁤struggles to keep up with the energy demands of artificial intelligence, pushing the industry toward on-site power generation.

Data center developers, including Soluna, are increasingly purchasing ⁢excess power ⁤from renewable sources⁢ like wind, hydro, and solar ⁢plants.Soluna anticipates having ⁤123 megawatts of capacity across ⁤three facilities in Kentucky and Texas by year’s end. The company also ⁢has seven projects⁤ in development, totaling ⁤over 800 megawatts.

In Texas, ⁣abundant curtailed energy from wind and solar ⁤farms exists due⁢ to transmission limitations. ⁤Data center developers are capitalizing on this unused wind energy in West Texas, far⁢ from ⁢major cities, by locating facilities with advanced computers and cooling systems near these energy⁢ sources.

IREN, another data center developer ‍in Texas, utilizes curtailed renewable ‍power. The company, which specializes in facilities optimized for Bitcoin mining and AI, has developed ⁣a 7.5-gigawatt facility in Childress and broken ground on a 1.4-gigawatt data center in Sweetwater.

Kent Draper, IREN’s chief commercial officer, said the company buys power during periods of⁤ oversupply and reduces consumption when prices spike by powering down computers. ⁢Belizaire⁢ noted that⁣ energy curtailment is a global issue, affecting regions from Oklahoma to Australia.

Belizaire said that‍ large-scale renewable ⁤energy development leads to curtailment.

The U.S. Energy information Administration reported increasing ‍solar and wind power curtailments ‍in ⁣California. ⁤In 2024, the grid operator curtailed ⁣3.4 ‍million megawatt hours⁣ of utility-scale wind ⁢and solar output, a 29% ‍increase ⁤from⁢ 2023.

What’s⁢ next

The trend of data centers locating near renewable energy sources is expected to continue as demand for power increases and the role of lasting energy becomes more‍ critical. This shift will likely influence grid infrastructure development and energy storage solutions.
