Streaming viewership continues to demonstrate a dynamic landscape, with January 19 seeing a resurgence for Netflix’s Stranger Things, reclaiming the top spot in Nielsen’s Overall Streaming chart. The series logged 1.66 billion viewing minutes for the week, narrowly surpassing Paramount+’s Landman, which secured the number two position with 1.615 billion minutes viewed.

The competition for streaming dominance remains fierce, with five titles exceeding one billion viewing minutes during the week. Netflix continues to lead in overall representation on the chart, with six titles, two of which are also available on other platforms. This highlights the network effect increasingly influencing consumer choices, as content availability across multiple services drives engagement.

Beyond Stranger Things and Landman, Netflix’s offerings continued to perform strongly. The crime thriller The Rip, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, climbed to third place with 1.378 billion viewing minutes. Notably, the film resonated particularly well with the 35-64 age demographic, accounting for 57% of its total audience. This demographic preference underscores the continued importance of established stars and familiar genres in attracting viewership.

Netflix’s His & Hers, which previously held the top spot, slipped to fourth place with 1.371 billion minutes viewed. Similar to The Rip, this Tessa Thompson-led miniseries also demonstrated strong appeal among the 35-64 age group, with 56% of its viewership falling within that bracket. The consistent performance of these titles suggests a strategic focus on content catering to this key demographic.

HBO Max’s The Pitt maintained its fifth-place position with 1.191 billion viewing minutes. The series’ viewership is split between its first and second seasons, with 49% dedicated to Season 1 and 51% to the three available episodes of Season 2. This indicates sustained interest in the series, even as new episodes are released incrementally.

Further down the chart, Netflix’s acquired series Southland entered the top ten with 930 million viewing minutes. The shared title The Closer, available on Netflix, Peacock, and Pluto TV, remained in seventh place with 911 million minutes viewed. Disney+’s Bluey moved up to eighth with 887 million minutes, while Peacock’s The Traitors saw a slight decline to ninth with 865 million minutes. Rounding out the top ten was Grey’s Anatomy, shared between Netflix and Hulu, with 844 million minutes viewed.

The return of Stranger Things to the top spot is particularly noteworthy, following a week where it ceded the lead. The series’ initial release of its fifth and final season on Christmas Day generated record-breaking viewership, amassing 6.89 billion viewing minutes during the week of December 22-28 – the third-largest weekly total ever reported by Nielsen. Total viewership for December exceeded 15 billion minutes, demonstrating the series’ enduring appeal and ability to drive significant engagement.

Landman, which premiered in November, has consistently performed well, remaining in the top two for several weeks. The series has maintained viewership above one billion minutes for ten consecutive weeks, indicating a strong and sustained audience base. Season 2 of Landman has attracted a larger female audience, with 49% of viewers identifying as female, compared to 46% in the first season. This shift in demographic composition suggests a broadening appeal for the series.

These streaming ratings provide a snapshot of the evolving preferences of viewers and the competitive dynamics within the streaming industry. The continued success of established franchises like Stranger Things, alongside the consistent performance of newer titles like Landman and The Pitt, highlights the importance of both recognizable brands and compelling original content in attracting and retaining subscribers. The demographic data further underscores the need for streaming services to cater to diverse audiences and tailor their content offerings accordingly.
