It’s no longer something you just see in porn videos.

Even in mainstream media, Strypex has become increasingly normalized even though it is potentially fatal.

And this is also evident in reality, especially among young people. Last June was convicted a man from Vännäs to prison for causing her girlfriend cardiac arrest and lasting brain damage after strangling her into unconsciousness during a sex act.

In that case, the strangle was voluntarily, but in many cases the strangulation comes without warning or is part of the violence in a destructive relationship.

The result, which has now been presented, shows how strangle can be even more dangerous than expected.

– It doesn’t just have to be about life and death at that particular moment, it can also have an impact on the brain in the longer term. You can have problems with, for example, learning and it can put the “harmless” strangle sex in a completely different perspective if you start to think: will I give my girlfriend or boyfriend permanent brain damage if I do this? says Eva Rudd, chief physician and specialist in forensic medicine at the Swedish Forensic Medicines Agency.

Special penal provision

In its survey, the Forensic Medicines Agency has gone through the deaths of the last 20 years where the death of the death was a violence. These are 139 cases where the majority of victims have been women – strangulation is the second most common approach to deadly partner violence against women.

It has also been reviewed all cases of non -deadly throttle from 2022, it is about 600 cases. Even there, the majority of victims are women and the perpetrators are usually men.

– One thing we see is that the violence does not always leave visible injuries, sometimes not even in deadly violence. This means that the dark figure can be large, says Brita Zilg, forensic doctor at the Forensic Medicines Agency.

Eva Johnsson, who is a vice prosecutor at the Prosecutor’s Development Department, opens up that the new knowledge can lead to more charges of attempted murder when strict violence has been involved.

– Legislators may also review a special penalty provision for precisely string violence that you have in, for example, England. Maybe you should also review consent legislation and make sure that you cannot consent to a strangle. It is a way for society to put his foot down, she says.

“Must talk to the young people”

Even the police, who are often those who first meet the person who has been subjected to violence, need to be better at learning to see the sometimes almost invisible signs of strip violence and to ask the right questions.

Most often it is the broken arm or the bleeding eyebrow you see and may miss the more subtle signs of strangulation.

Erika Gyllenswärd, business developer on crime in close relationships at the police’s national operational department, says the police should treat violence in close relationships as gang crime.

– There rarely wants to talk to us. We must be prepared that even those who are subject to violence in close relationships may not want to participate in the investigation so we must secure all the evidence we can, ”she says.

Something the experts also press is that society must be better at informing young people about the dangers of strangle sex and throttle.

– We adults talk too little about this and we have to talk to young people about this at their level and teach them about the risks, says Eva Rudd.
