BANTZENHEIM, France – A unique museum in Bantzenheim offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in teh world of vintage motorcycles, thanks to the lifelong passion of collector Raymond lemoine. The museum, which opened in 2013, houses a significant portion of Lemoine’s collection, primarily featuring motorcycles from the Ravat brand.
Upon entering the museum, visitors can don helmets and gloves before mounting a motorcycle simulator. the experience features a screen that scrolls in sync with the “bike’s” acceleration, creating a sensation of freedom. This serves as an introduction to the extensive collection of Raymond Lemoine.
A Collector’s Passion
raymond Lemoine, now 96, has been a dedicated collector throughout his life. His passion for motorcycles began in July 1995. “I bought a motorcycle a few months after a personal tragedy, the death of my wife, to take my mind off things,” he said.
lemoine focused on motorcycles from the Ravat brand, acquiring more than 180 models between 1995 and 2002. He meticulously restored each motorcycle, handling both bodywork and mechanical repairs.
over the years,Lemoine received numerous offers to purchase his collection. However, he wanted to ensure it remained in the region. He proposed donating it to the municipality of Bantzenheim, provided a museum was built to house it.
After a year of negotiations, the project came to fruition. The museum opened in 2013 in a renovated farmhouse opposite the town hall. Ultimately, 92 motorcycles were donated to the village.

Over the past 11 years, the Grange aux Bécannes museum’s collection has grown significantly through donations and strategic acquisitions. Visitors can now view iconic motorcycle models from brands that have shaped the history of motorized two-wheelers. These include Terrot, Wonder, Motobécane, Peugeot, and Ravat.
Among the museum’s rare exhibits is a 600 CC Ratier motorcycle, once used by the National Gendarmerie. This particular bike notably served as an escort for General Charles de Gaulle. History enthusiasts may recognize it as being present during the 1962 Petit-Clamart attack, an assassination attempt targeting the then-President of the republic.

Beyond simply displaying exceptional motorcycles, the Grange aux Bécannes museum offers insights into the evolution of motorcycle technology and regulations. Such as, prior to 1930, headlights were not mandatory on motorcycles, and front brakes were frequently enough offered as optional equipment.
remarkably, approximately 98% of the motorcycles in the collection are maintained in working order. While the primary goal is preservation, these vintage machines are occasionally brought out for special events.
