Generous Donation Secures Future of Highland Railway
A substantial £1 million donation from an anonymous American benefactor has been awarded to the Strathspey Railway, a historic steam railway located in the Scottish Highlands. The donor, who was reportedly impressed during a visit years ago, wishes to remain anonymous, according to a statement from the railway.
The volunteer-run company, based in Aviemore, stated the “exceptionally generous” gift will be used to cover operating costs and fund essential locomotive refurbishments.
Railway’s Prominence in Television and film
Strathspey Railway has gained recognition as a filming location for several television productions, including three series of the popular BBC show The traitors, which is filmed at Ardross Castle near Alness as reported by the BBC. The railway has also appeared in the BBC drama Monarch of the Glen and ITV’s Doctor Findlay.
Strategic Investment for Long-Term Sustainability
The railway’s board confirmed they are seeking financial advice to ensure the donation is invested effectively, both in the short and long term. A spokesperson explained, “This exceptionally generous – and unexpected donation - will allow the railway to rebuild its financial reserves whilst being able to invest in a number of projects which will underpin the sustainability of the railway.”
Strathspey Railway operates a 10-mile (16km) route connecting Aviemore and Broomhill,with a stop in Boat of Garten.
