Strengthening Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection: Key Legal Revisions Proposed

Strengthening Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection: Key Legal Revisions Proposed

November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams News

Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Efforts

Jakarta – Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Protection Minister Abdul Kadir Karding met with Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas to discuss enhancing protections for Indonesian migrant workers.

Karding highlighted the need to transfer authority from the Ministry of Manpower to the Ministry of Migrant Workers’ Protection. He stated that Law Number 18 of 2017 does not fully support migrant workers’ needs. This transition aims to strengthen legal support and address problems faced by migrant workers.

The ministers are working on creating an omnibus law that will cover all areas of migrant worker protection. Karding plans to propose changes to the existing law through the Legislative Body of the House of Representatives (DPR).

Minister Agtas supported Karding’s proposal and emphasized the importance of close coordination. He noted that the changes would impact the Ministry of Manpower.

Agtas believes it is urgent to revise the migrant workers’ protection law, as the current support is not sufficient. This collaboration aims to improve conditions for Indonesian migrant workers and ensure their rights are protected effectively.
