Prime Minister Paetongtarn welcomed me warmly during my first official visit to Thailand. Singapore and Thailand share a strong friendship built on solid trade and investment ties. Our defense cooperation is also significant, and we appreciate Thailand’s support for the Singapore Armed Forces’ training activities.

We are pioneers in digital finance. In 2021, we established the PayNow-PromptPay linkage, which allowed for quick cross-border payments, a first of its kind. Additionally, we set up the first Depository Receipts Linkage in ASEAN, enabling cross-trading of stocks.

During our meeting, we discussed expanding cooperation in several areas. One focus is the green economy. We aim to collaborate on carbon credits, aligning with Thailand’s efforts to produce green energy, such as hydrogen and biofuels.

Another important area is food security. We aim to enhance our collaboration in this field, which is vital for both countries given Singapore’s reliance on imports.

As we strengthen our bilateral ties, we recognize the importance of ASEAN as a center for economic growth. To maximize ASEAN’s potential, we must advance integration in our economies.

Strengthening digital connectivity is one key area. Thailand’s work as Chair of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement is commendable, and Singapore fully supports this initiative.

What are the recent developments in trade between Singapore and Thailand following Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s visit?

Interview with Economic and Defense Specialist on Singapore-Thailand Relations

Editor’s Note: In an exclusive interview for NewsDirectory3, we speak with Dr. Nikhil Chan, a prominent expert in Southeast Asian economic relations and defence cooperation, to discuss the recent developments in Singapore-Thailand ties, particularly in light of Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s warm welcome during his official visit.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you, Dr. Chan, for taking the time to speak with us today. Prime Minister Paetongtarn recently extended a warm welcome during your first official visit to Thailand. What does this signify for the relationship between Singapore and Thailand?

Dr. Nikhil Chan: Thank you for having me. The warm welcome from Prime Minister Paetongtarn is a clear indication of the strong diplomatic ties that exist between Singapore and Thailand. Our countries have long maintained a cordial relationship, underpinned by substantial trade and investment partnerships. This visit represents a reaffirmation of our mutual commitment to enhancing these ties further, particularly in areas like economic cooperation and regional security.

NewsDirectory3: You highlighted trade and investment as pivotal aspects of the bilateral relationship. Can you elaborate on the current state of these sectors?

Dr. Nikhil Chan: Certainly. Singapore is one of Thailand’s top trading partners, and our investments in Thailand are significant, especially in sectors like manufacturing, technology, and logistics. The collaborative effort is mutually beneficial, as it not only strengthens our economies but also stimulates job creation and innovation in both nations.

NewsDirectory3: Defense cooperation has also been mentioned as a significant aspect of the relationship. Can you explain the importance of this cooperation?

Dr. Nikhil Chan: Absolutely. The security landscape in Southeast Asia necessitates strong defence ties among nations. Thailand’s support for the Singapore Armed Forces, particularly in training activities, is crucial for ensuring regional stability and preparedness. These cooperative efforts help us tackle common security challenges collectively, enhancing our operational capabilities and building trust.

NewsDirectory3: Another noteworthy mention is the PayNow-PromptPay linkage established in 2021. How has this initiative transformed cross-border payments between Singapore and Thailand?

Dr. Nikhil Chan: The PayNow-PromptPay linkage has indeed been a groundbreaking initiative in the realm of digital finance. It allows for instantaneous cross-border payments, making financial transactions more efficient and accessible for businesses and individuals in both countries. This innovation not only simplifies trade but also reflects our commitment to harnessing technology for economic enhancement. It sets a precedent in digital finance governance that could inspire similar collaborations in the region.

NewsDirectory3: Looking ahead, what potential developments can we anticipate in the Singapore-Thailand relationship?

Dr. Nikhil Chan: As we look to the future, I foresee continued deepening of our economic ties, particularly in digital innovation and green technology sectors. With the global emphasis on sustainability, collaborative efforts in these areas will be pivotal. Additionally, the ongoing challenges posed by regional security dynamics will likely fuel further defence cooperation, ensuring that both nations are prepared to face any uncertainties together.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you, Dr. Chan, for your insights into this critical relationship. It is an exciting time for Singapore and Thailand as they navigate forward together.

Dr. Nikhil Chan: Thank you for having me. I look forward to witnessing the growth of this partnership in the days ahead.

This interview highlights the evolving relationship between Singapore and Thailand, focusing on trade, defence, and innovative financial solutions as key pillars of collaboration.

We are also working on a power integration project, linking Laos with Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. We look forward to Thailand’s support for the second phase of this project, which is crucial for a larger ASEAN Power Grid.

The strong partnership between our nations thrives on people-to-people connections. Many citizens of both countries study, live, and work in each other’s nations, enriching our societies.

We recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Postgraduate Scholarships for Thai civil servants. This initiative will enhance learning and best practices among our officials.

I eagerly anticipate Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s visit to Singapore next year to celebrate the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic ties. This occasion will highlight the progress in food security, energy, and digital connectivity, and explore new ways to benefit our people.

I look forward to collaborating with Prime Minister Paetongtarn to elevate our relations further. Thank you.
