Ryans Unconcerned About C.J. Stroud’s Shoulder Soreness

Updated June 03, 2025

Houston Texans coach‍ DeMeco Ryans addressed concerns about quarterback C.J. Stroud‘s ⁣limited participation in spring‍ practices. Ryans stated Tuesday that he has “no concerns” regarding stroud’s throwing, attributing it to “general soreness” in ‌his shoulder.

During the Texans’ organized team activities (OTAs), wich ‍began May 28, stroud has⁤ not been seen throwing passes during media observation periods. His involvement has primarily been limited to handoffs during 11-on-11 walk-throughs. Despite this, ryans remains confident in⁤ the Texans quarterback’s progress.

“There’s no concerns with C.J.,” Ryans said after‍ the team’s fifth OTA practice. “It’s just general soreness. We are taking extra precaution‌ with him. He’ll be good to go.No concerns on ‍my end.”

Ryans declined to confirm whether Stroud would throw during the mandatory minicamp the following week. He also did not comment⁤ on whether Stroud had received any offseason treatment for his shoulder.

‌ ‍‌ “when he’s⁢ ready to go, he’ll be ready‌ to go,” Ryans said.

Stroud endured a meaningful amount of pressure ‌last season, being sacked 52 ‍times, the second-most in ⁣the NFL. According to Next Gen Stats, he faced pressure on 38.6% of his‌ dropbacks, also the second-highest rate in‌ the league. The Kansas City Chiefs ‍particularly overwhelmed Stroud in the Texans’ playoff loss, sacking him eight ⁤times and pressuring him on ⁤56% of his dropbacks.

In‌ response to these protection issues, the Texans⁤ made substantial changes to thier offensive⁤ line. Laremy tunsil was traded to the ⁢ Washington ‍Commanders, Kenyon Green was⁢ traded to the Philadelphia eagles, and Shaq mason was released.

To fill these gaps, houston signed Cam Robinson, Trent Brown, and Laken Tomlinson, while also⁢ trading ⁢for Ed Ingram. Additionally, they drafted Aireontae Ersery to bolster their tackle options, joining Tytus Howard and Blake Fisher.

Ryans⁢ also ⁢made coaching changes, hiring Cole Popovich as offensive line coach and⁢ Nick Calley as offensive coordinator, aiming to further improve pass ‍protection and the Texans’ offensive C.J. Stroud ‍support system.

What’s next

the Texans hope these changes will provide better protection for stroud, enabling the team to advance beyond the divisional round,a feat the franchise has yet to achieve. The focus remains on ensuring ⁢Stroud’s readiness and improving the team’s overall performance through strategic player acquisitions and coaching adjustments to enhance their NFL season.
