New Zealand students pursuing their ⁢first degree are now eligible to receive up to $12,000 in funding for their final year of study or final two years of work-based learning,‌ a shift from the previous scheme that covered the first year of tuition.

Eligibility Requirements for the final-Year Fees-Free Program

the final-year fees-free program is available to students studying for the⁤ first time. This means students who have previously completed a degree are not eligible. The change in policy,⁣ from funding the first ⁣year to the final year, took effect on January 1, 2023.

payments are made retroactively, only after the student has completed the eligible year of study.‌ Therefore, the first students qualifying under the new ‌criteria are ⁣becoming eligible in 2024.

Further details on eligibility⁣ can‌ be found on ⁤the Inland‍ Revenue’s Fees-Free page.

Funding Amounts and Program Design

Eligible students can receive up to $12,000 to cover tuition fees for their final year ⁣of study or the final two years of a work-based learning program. This funding is intended to support students in completing their⁣ qualifications.

According to‌ a statement from the Beehive Executive Wing, the program aims to incentivize completion of tertiary‌ education.

Economic Considerations and Debate

While the program provides financial assistance to students, some economists question⁤ whether it represents the ⁣most effective use of public funds. Concerns have been raised about the potential for shifting costs rather than genuinely increasing access to education.

One economist, speaking anonymously to Radio New Zealand, suggested⁢ that‍ focusing on earlier stages ⁣of education ⁤might yield greater long-term⁢ benefits.
