The Situation in Gaza: An Urgent Call for Action
Norske myndigheter remain passive while the suffering in Gaza reaches alarming levels. Over 400 days of aggressive military action has devastated Nord-Gaza. Thousands of people are trapped in their homes, cut off from food, water, and medical supplies. This scenario represents a man-made disaster.
Experts from the independent Famine Review Committee have warned of an impending famine in Nord-Gaza. Various United Nations organizations have also sounded alarms, stating that the residents are at risk of dying from disease, starvation, or violence due to ongoing blockades and bombings.
Recently, the Israeli parliament enacted a ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which severely impacts humanitarian aid efforts. Palestinians in Gaza and their families abroad face an uncertain future, with many unable to communicate with loved ones since the start of the blockade.
Norway has condemned Israel’s actions, a step in the right direction. However, strong words are insufficient. To prompt change, more concrete actions are needed. Over 2,000 Israeli citizens have urged the global community to prioritize actions over statements. They call for sanctions against Israel to halt the cycle of violence.
Students for Palestine Trondheim demand that the Norwegian government spearhead international efforts to lift the blockade of Nord-Gaza and allow humanitarian assistance. Every day without action worsens the plight of Palestinian children, women, and men. International leaders warn that failure to act could result in ethnic cleansing in the region.
Arnulf Øverland once said, “Do you not believe it? You know it!” We must remember Palestine. We cannot afford to be silent.
