Taipei, Taiwan – democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Su Qiaohui criticized teh Ma Ying-jeou Foundation for changing its stance on the term “Chinese Taipei” following student protests at National Taiwan University. The controversy erupted after a mainland Chinese student congratulated the Taiwanese baseball team on winning the World Championship, referring to them as the “Chinese Taipei Team.”
The incident sparked outrage among Taiwanese students,who chanted “This is not chinese Taipei” during a protest at the university. Xiao Jusen, CEO of the ma Ying-jeou Foundation, initially defended the student’s statement, arguing that cross-strait exchanges should allow for different perspectives. However, facing mounting public pressure, Xiao later clarified that the student meant to congratulate “our Taiwan team.”
Su qiaohui accused the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation of attempting to downplay the controversy by shifting its narrative. “It’s clear that they were trying to appease public anger by changing their tune,” Su stated. “This incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding the use of political language in Taiwan.”
The DPP legislator emphasized that while Taiwan welcomes academic and cultural exchanges, the use of terms like “Chinese Taipei” is unacceptable.”We will not tolerate attempts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty,” Su declared.
The controversy comes amidst growing tensions between Taiwan and China. The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation, named after Taiwan’s former president, has been criticized for promoting closer ties with mainland China.
Su Qiaohui also addressed recent legislative chaos, where opposition lawmakers have been accused of obstructing parliamentary proceedings. She criticized the opposition’s tactics,arguing that they are detrimental to Taiwan’s democracy.
“The opposition’s actions are irresponsible and harmful to Taiwan’s future,” Su said. “They are putting their own political interests ahead of the needs of the Taiwanese people.”
