Subaru unveiled its all-new, fully electric Getaway SUV at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, marking the company’s fourth global battery electric vehicle (BEV) offering. The three-row midsize SUV boasts a spacious interior and a potential range exceeding 300 miles, positioning it as a direct competitor in the growing family EV market.

The Getaway, as the name suggests, is designed for adventure and family travel, according to Subaru. The vehicle features a choice of two battery options: a 77.0 kWh battery and a larger 95.8 kWh battery. The larger battery pack provides a range of over 300 miles. Subaru claims the 95.8 kWh version can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using an onboard battery preconditioning system and is equipped with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port.

Powerful Performance and AWD Standard

Subaru is emphasizing performance with the Getaway, equipping it with high-output front and rear motors delivering a maximum system output of 420 horsepower. This makes the Getaway the most powerful Subaru ever produced, surpassing the 375hp Trailseeker. The vehicle will come standard with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, enhanced with technology cultivated by the company to provide stability and control on various surfaces.

Collaboration with Toyota and US Production

The Getaway is a result of the ongoing collaboration between Subaru and Toyota in the EV space. Similar to the Subaru Uncharted, Solterra, and Trailseeker, the Getaway shares technology with Toyota’s offerings, specifically the Highlander EV. However, unlike previous collaborative models built in Japan, both the Subaru Getaway and the Toyota Highlander EV will be manufactured in the United States, at Toyota’s Kentucky factory.

Exterior and Interior Design

The exterior of the Getaway features a clean, seamless front design and a stately body, aiming for a sophisticated and striking presence. Inside, the cabin is designed for comfort, with sleek horizontal lines around the instrument panel creating an airy feel. Subaru has not yet released detailed specifications regarding interior materials or technology features beyond the overall design aesthetic.

Market Positioning and Competition

The launch of the Getaway places Subaru directly into competition with other three-row electric SUVs, including the Tesla Model X, the Kia EV9, and the upcoming Toyota Highlander EV. The Getaway’s standard AWD and focus on adventure-ready capability are intended to differentiate it within the segment. The vehicle’s pricing has not yet been announced, but will be a key factor in its market success.

The 2027 Subaru Getaway represents a significant step in Subaru’s electrification strategy, offering a larger, more family-oriented EV option to complement its existing lineup. The company hopes the vehicle will appeal to customers seeking a spacious, capable, and long-range electric SUV for both daily commutes and adventurous road trips.

The all-new Subaru Getaway, the fourth model in Subaru’s global battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup, is a three-row midsize SUV that combines the unique driving performance of a BEV with a spacious interior afforded by the lineup’s largest body size.

Subaru Corporation

The unveiling at the New York Auto Show signals Subaru’s commitment to expanding its EV presence in the North American market. Further details regarding availability and pricing are expected to be released in the coming months.
