Subic Bay, philippines – A high-ranking French naval official has lauded Subic Bay as a strategically vital location for supporting aircraft carrier operations, highlighting it’s deep waters and existing industrial infrastructure. The commendation comes as France deepens its defense cooperation with the Philippines, a move underscored by recent joint naval patrols and military equipment proposals.
A strategic Resurgence for Subic Bay
Subic Bay, once the site of one of Washington’s largest overseas military installations, comparable in size to Singapore, is experiencing a resurgence in defense activity.Following the withdrawal of American forces in 1992 at the request of the Philippine government, the former naval base has been revitalized. local companies and the Philippine Navy, operating under the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, have repurposed the base’s remnants.
In recent years, the bay’s logistical potential has drawn increased attention from foreign navies, especially in the context of rising tensions in the South China Sea and the Luzon Strait. This renewed interest is evidenced by foreign naval forces examining the area’s capabilities and the prepositioning of military equipment.
“The environment is favorable to host an aircraft carrier,” stated the Admiral. “Depth is here and moast of all, we found all infrastructures and industrial landscape necessary for potential support.”
The strategic advantage of Subic Bay is further bolstered by its established maritime infrastructure. The bay hosts several shipyards capable of supporting both commercial and military vessels. Notably, the Subic Bay Drydock Corporation holds a Master Ship Repair Agreement with the U.S. Navy, a certification that attests to its capacity to maintain and repair American naval vessels to stringent standards.
Deepening Franco-Philippine Defense Cooperation
The French Admiral’s remarks coincide with a significant increase in defense ties between France and the Philippines, marking one of the most intensive engagements by a European power with Manila to date. In 2023, Philippine and French defense officials formalized plans for enhanced cooperation. Since then,France has actively participated in multilateral naval drills in the Philippines, deploying vessels, personnel, and aircraft. Furthermore, Paris has offered advanced military assets, including submarines, radars, and coast guard patrol vessels, to bolster the Philippines’ military modernization program.
Prior to its arrival in Subic Bay, the French Carrier Strike Group (CSG) participated in France’s maiden joint patrol with Philippine forces in the disputed South China Sea. Rear Admiral Jacques Mallard, commander of the French CSG, emphasized the importance of these operations.
“We are mostly here because there is a free and open area to sail in,” RADM. Mallard told reporters in the Philippines. “And we are here basically to use this right of common space to make sure that this space stays common.”
