Subnautica 2 Delay not Tied to $250 Million Bonus, Developer Claims

The highly anticipated sequel to the underwater exploration game Subnautica was originally slated for release this year, but has been delayed. Questions arose regarding the motivation behind the delay, specifically whether it was strategically implemented to avoid triggering a significant $250 million bonus payment tied to KraftonS acquisition of Unknown Worlds. Now, the developer is speaking out, claiming the delay was solely to add more content to the game.
Developer Denies Delay Linked to Acquisition earnout
Unknown Worlds entertainment studio head, Bruce Papoutsis, stated he was unaware of the specifics of the acquisition contract and the potential bonus. He clarified that the details surrounding Krafton‘s acquisition were beyond his current understanding, and he was not informed that the delay was intended to impact any earnout clauses.
“I was never told the delay was meant specifically to impact any earnout or anything like that,” Papoutsis said.
The controversy stemmed from reports suggesting Krafton might benefit financially from postponing subnautica 2‘s release. The acquisition agreement reportedly includes a $250 million bonus payable upon the game’s launch. Delaying the release would, in theory, allow Krafton to avoid this payment. However, Papoutsis’ statement directly refutes this claim, attributing the decision to a desire to enhance the game’s content.
krafton’s investment in Franchises and Recent Acquisitions
This situation unfolds against a backdrop of importent financial performance and strategic investment by krafton. In February, the company announced record annual revenue and operating profit for the fiscal year ending December 31,2024. Krafton outlined a 2025 strategy focused on “aggressive” investments in production capabilities to secure a “big franchise IP.”
This ambition is evidenced by Krafton’s recent acquisition of Tango Gameworks, the studio behind Hi-Fi Rush, after Microsoft announced plans to close it. This move demonstrates Krafton’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of owned intellectual property and bolstering its development resources.
What Does This Mean for Subnautica 2?
While the delay may disappoint fans eager to return to the depths, the developer’s description suggests a focus on delivering a more polished and expansive experiance. The additional development time will allow Unknown Worlds to refine gameplay, expand the game world, and potentially introduce new features.
The lack of a firm release date remains a point of uncertainty. However, the studio’s commitment to quality and the backing of Krafton’s financial resources offer a degree of reassurance that Subnautica 2 is still on track, albeit with a revised timeline.
Game Developer has reached out to Krafton for further comment on the matter.
