Subtropical Ridge Shift Expected to Drive Temperatures Up to 33°C in Some Areas

Spain’s national meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued a warning for temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius across multiple regions, with some areas expected to reach up to 33 degrees due to the displacement of the subtropical ridge.

The alert, issued on April 22, 2026, indicates that the shift in atmospheric patterns will bring summer-like conditions earlier than usual, prompting public health advisories and increased preparedness measures across affected communities.

AEMET’s forecast highlights that the temperature rise is directly linked to the movement of the subtropical ridge, a high-pressure system that typically influences Iberian weather patterns during warmer months. This year, its earlier displacement is contributing to unseasonably high readings.
