Suburban Family Man’s Dark Secret: 32-Year-Old Husband and Father Arrested in Connection with Grisly Discovery of Woman’s Skeletal Remains
Arrest Made in Connection with Abandoned Skeletal Remains in Yokkaichi City
In April 2024, a 32-year-old co-worker was arrested on suspicion of abandoning a corpse after a woman’s skeletal remains were found in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture. Police believe they know the circumstances of the man’s death and are investigating.
A man who was gathering wild vegetables discovered the skeletal remains of a woman on a large plot of land in Nakano-cho, Yokkaichi City, which at the time was a densely forested area. The body was that of a Chinese citizen, Zhao Xia (then 36 years old), who had been living in the dormitory of her workplace in the city of Yokkaichi.
Zhao Xia had been missing since July 2023, and her boss had filed a missing person report after she could not be contacted. The body was believed to have been dead for several months, and police were investigating the incident.
The person arrested for dumping Zhao Xia’s body was Juni Jervin Bernadez (32), a Filipino national and Zhao Xia’s colleague. Juni lived with his wife and daughter in the town of Komono, about 4 kilometers from where the body was found.
A neighbor of Juni’s reported seeing a large police presence in the area, with about a dozen officers carrying boxes and searching a house. The neighbor described Juni as a “nice foreigner” and expressed surprise at the sudden turn of events.
Police believe Juni may have been aware of the circumstances of Zhao Xia’s death and are continuing to investigate.
