A 44-year-old Slovak biologist from Nitra is facing legal proceedings in Germany after confessing to the murder of his 31-year-old wife and their two-month-old daughter. The tragedy occurred in a residential apartment in the Oberbilk district of Düsseldorf.

The incident first came to light on November 29, 2025, when emergency services responded to a report at the family’s home. Upon entering the apartment, authorities discovered the bodies of the woman and the infant, both of whom had been brutally killed.

Police detained the suspect, identified as Erik, at the scene. According to police reports, he was found covered in blood and holding a pocket knife. He had sustained severe self-inflicted injuries and was immediately transported to a hospital for urgent surgery.

Legal Proceedings and Mental Health Assessment

As of April 29, 2026, a court in Düsseldorf is reviewing the case. The legal proceedings are currently focused on determining whether the suspect should be committed to a secure psychiatric facility for long-term treatment under constant professional supervision.

Reporting from the German newspaper Bild indicates that the suspect may have stopped taking medication for paranoid psychosis, which experts suggest may have triggered the events leading to the killings.

Professional and Personal Background

The suspect was described as a successful academic who studied at a university in Nitra and built a career as a scientist. In Düsseldorf, he worked as a researcher at the prestigious Heinrich Heine University.

To outside observers, the family appeared to lead an orderly life. The couple’s daughter had been born in late September 2025. Acquaintances stated that the parents had been looking forward to the birth of their child and that there were no outward signs of the impending tragedy.
