The united Nations is calling for an immediate ceasefire in and around El Fasher, North Darfur, Sudan, as the humanitarian situation deteriorates and access for aid workers remains severely restricted. The call came from UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Humanitarian Crisis deepens
Mr. Dujarric stated that repeated attacks on humanitarian personnel and assets in North Darfur have been occurring for months, hindering efforts to provide assistance. The UN and its partners are struggling to move pre-positioned supplies into El Fasher despite their proximity.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), approximately 70 trucks carrying vital humanitarian aid are currently stalled in nyala, South Darfur, awaiting permission to proceed as of Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Protecting Civilians is Paramount
UN Secretary-General António Guterres “insists that immediate steps must be taken to protect civilians and enable the safe, unhindered and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance into the area and to allow any civilians seeking to leave the area voluntarily to do so safely,” Mr. dujarric emphasized.
The situation in El Fasher is particularly concerning due to the large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have sought refuge in the city, exacerbating the strain on already limited resources. The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the rapid Support Forces (RSF) is the primary driver of the crisis.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Ramtane Lamamra, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, is actively engaging with the warring parties to de-escalate the violence and facilitate a return to a meaningful political process. He remains “ready to support genuine efforts to halt the violence and establish an inclusive political process that the people of Sudan demand.”
The UN continues to advocate for a nationwide ceasefire and a extensive political solution to address the root causes of the conflict, wich erupted on April 15, 2023, between the SAF, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by general Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).
