Suicide by Lot: Victims Who Drew for Their Endings
Iraqi Security Forces dismantle Cult Allegedly Practicing Ritualistic Suicide
Iraqi security forces have dismantled a group calling itself “Al-Kurban” (the Victims), which authorities say operated on radical beliefs and engaged in the practice of ritualistic suicide. The operation, carried out in diwaniye province after a month of surveillance, resulted in the detention of 21 individuals, including the group’s leaders, according to rudaw reporting on January 15, 2026.
The group, described as a secret religious community affiliated with the Shiite sect, allegedly resolute a “sacrifice” through a lottery system. This individual was then compelled to end their life as an offering to Imam Ali bin Abu Talib, a central figure in Shiite Islam.
Targeting Young People
Ershad Hakim,a spokesperson for the Iraqi National Security Association, stated the group specifically targeted young people, attempting to influence them through religious rhetoric. Authorities emphasized the extreme and dangerous rituals posed a serious threat to public safety.
All 21 detainees were young, with three holding administrative positions within the organization. Most suspects were registered in Diwaniye, while two were registered in Najaf.
Security sources indicated the timing of the operation was critical, aiming to prevent potential loss of life during the “Recebiye” period, a time of heightened religious pilgrimage.
Investigating External Connections
iraqi security units are investigating potential connections between the organization and external entities, believing it is attempting to expand its influence in southern Iraq. Judge Hakim affirmed the continued determination to combat such threats to public security.
Official data reveals that 203 individuals affiliated with the group were detained and referred to judicial authorities throughout the previous year.Al-Kurban was reportedly established in Nasiriyah, the center of Zikar province, in 2020 and operated in secrecy.
