Sullivan Sizzles at Leopard Creek, Takes Early Lead at Alfred Dunhill Championship
Leopard Creek, South Africa – Englishman Andy Sullivan stormed out of the gate at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, firing a bogey-free 64 to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round.
Sullivan, a two-time winner on South African soil, took full advantage of the morning conditions at Leopard Creek Country Club, racking up eight birdies to set the early clubhouse target at eight under par.
“It’s critically important to get off to a good start as you know at the weekend it’s going to get tougher and tougher,” Sullivan said. “This place generally doesn’t get easier so getting off to a good start’s nice, gives you that little bit of a buffer, but you know you’re in for a serious grind over the next couple of days.”
The blistering conditions proved challenging for the afternoon wave, wiht none able to match Sullivan’s extraordinary score. Fellow Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick, South African favorite Casey Jarvis, and Swede Marcus Kinhult share second place, one stroke behind Sullivan.
Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin, a rising star on the DP World Tour, sits inside the top 20 after carding a solid 69.
