McIntosh Shatters World Record in 200 Butterfly at Short Course worlds
Budapest, Hungary – canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh continued her dominant performance at the 2024 Short Course World Championships, smashing Mireia Belmonte Garcia’s decade-old world record in the women’s 200 butterfly.
McIntosh touched the wall in a blistering 1:59.32, shaving .29 seconds off Belmonte Garcia’s previous mark and becoming only the second woman in history to break the 2:00 barrier in the event.
“My goal for tonight was to get under the two-minute barrier,” McIntosh said after her historic swim. She had already signaled her intentions in the prelims, posting a field-leading 2:01.96, just 1.96 seconds shy of the record.
McIntosh’s strategy mirrored her dominant performance in the 400 freestyle final on night one,where she also broke a world record. She attacked from the start, splitting a blistering 27.08 on the first 50 meters, .67 seconds under world record pace.
By the halfway point, mcintosh had extended her lead to 1.2 seconds, splitting 29.96 on the second 50 to touch in 57.04.While Belmonte Garcia’s record pace closed the gap slightly over the second 100 meters, McIntosh maintained her composure, splitting 31.13/31.15 to secure the victory.
“I don’t train a lot of butterfly during practice,” McIntosh admitted, “but I have such a good aerobic base with my freestyle that it helps with the second 100 of the 200 butterfly.”
