Leon Marchand Dominates 200m IM with Texas Connection
french swimming sensation Leon Marchand continued his impressive run at the championships, capturing the gold medal in the men’s 200-metre individual medley (IM). The victory had a distinct “Texas flavor,” as Marchand, along with silver medalist Shaine Casas of the United States and bronze medalist Hubert Kos of Hungary, all train under the renowned American coach Bob Bowman at the University of Texas in Austin. Bowman, famously known for coaching Michael Phelps, is also set to coach Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh following these championships.
Marchand, who had shattered the 200m IM world record just 24 hours prior in the semifinal with a blistering 1:52.69,came close to breaking his own mark again in the final, touching the wall in 1:53.68. both of his recent swims significantly surpassed the previous world record of 1:54.00,set 14 years ago by American ryan Lochte.
“It was a bit tough today, but it was great,” Marchand commented after his win. “I know Shaine always goes out super fast so I knew I couldn’t be far off him. It was a battle all the way to the end, so that was cool for me.”
While Marchand won four individual titles at the previous year’s World Championships, he is focusing on two individual golds in Singapore. He already holds the world record in the 400m IM (4:02.50), set at the 2023 World Championships, and is eyeing a potential record-breaking performance in that event on Sunday, the closing day of the championships.”That’s still a whole new challenge,” Marchand added regarding the 400m IM. “I know I’ve gained a lot of power, but I’m not sure yet it makes a big difference over the 400. We’ll see.”
