American Swimmers Hit by Illness Ahead of Singapore Meet, Australia dominates Relays

Singapore – A cloud of illness has descended upon the American swimming contingent at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, with several athletes reportedly suffering from acute gastroenteritis. The team’s preparation was marred by an outbreak at a training camp in Thailand prior to their arrival in Singapore.
Nikki Warner, a spokeswoman for USA Swimming, declined to specify the number of affected swimmers, citing health confidentiality rules. However, she confirmed that all American swimmers had made the journey to Singapore.
Martens Claims Men’s 400 Free Gold as McIntosh Eyes 800 Free Showdown
in the early individual finals on Sunday, Germany’s Lukas Martens secured the men’s 400 freestyle title with a commanding performance, clocking in at 3:42.35. He narrowly edged out Australia’s Sam Short, who finished a mere 0.02 seconds behind.The bronze medal went to Kim Woomin of south Korea with a time of 3:42.60.
Martens, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, also holds the world record of 3:39.96.
Simultaneously occurring, Canadian star summer McIntosh, who captured three gold medals at the Paris Olympics last year, is set to be a major draw. McIntosh holds the world record in the 400 freestyle at 3:54.18. She is expected to face off against American legend Katie Ledecky in the 800 freestyle later in the meet, a race anticipated as the highlight of the championships.
Despite holding the 400 freestyle world record, McIntosh has yet to claim Olympic or World Championship gold in that specific event. Her Singapore campaign will also see her compete for titles in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, as well as the 200 butterfly. The legendary Michael Phelps remains the only swimmer to have achieved five individual gold medals at a single world championships.
Australia Shines in Relays, US Falters
The other two gold medals awarded on Sunday were in the relay events. The United States, heavily favored in both, surprisingly failed to secure victory in either.
The Australian women’s 4×100 freestyle relay team clinched gold, finishing just ahead of the United States.Australia’s winning time was 3:30.60, while the US team touched the wall in 3:31.04.The Netherlands secured the bronze medal with a time of 3:33.89.
In the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay, australia once again dominated, taking gold in 3:08.97. italy claimed the silver medal in 3:09.58, with the United States rounding out the podium in third place with a time of 3:09.64.
Semifinal Highlights and Upsets
sunday also saw the conclusion of three other semifinal events.
Qin Haiyang of China lead the charge in the 200 breaststroke semifinals, posting a time of 58.24. Paris Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy finished second in 58.62. Martinenghi faced an initial disqualification for movement on the blocks but was later reinstated following an appeal.
In the women’s 100 butterfly semifinals, Gretchen walsh of the United States and Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium tied for the top spot with identical times of 56.07. Maxime grousset of France emerged victorious in the men’s 50 butterfly semifinals, clocking in at 22.61.
