Edmundo González’s Lawyer Denies Rejection of Defence Document

José Vicente Haro, the lawyer representing Unidad’s presidential candidate Edmundo González, has denied claims that the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic rejected a document submitted by the defence. The document in question outlines the reasons for González’s absence at the Public Ministry’s summons.

Haro expressed his intention to submit the document to the Public Ministry, citing “violations of due process” and the infringement of González’s “right to the presumption of innocence and constitutional guarantees“.

Constitutional and Legal Reasons for Absence

According to Haro, the document provides “all the constitutional and legal reasons” for González’s non-attendance at the summons. It highlights the “degree of helplessness” and lack of precision in the nature of the quotations.

Haro stated that González is accused of acts that are not of a criminal nature, with the citation ticket sent to his client containing “pre-qualifying violations”.

Pre-Qualifying Offences and Violation of Constitutional Guarantees

Haro noted that his client was considered guilty from the start of the judicial process, which is not typical of a Public Administration action. “A court has to do it when the investigation is already underway,” he emphasized.

Haro also pointed out that González’s constitutional guarantees of due process have been violated, as the summons did not specify “the character with which he is summoned”.
