Christchurch Road Closure Follows Rockfall, Firefighters Face Abuse

The Main Rd to Sumner in Christchurch has been closed following a rockfall from the Clifton hillside on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Emergency services were alerted to falling rocks and water damaging protective netting above the road around 9:30am.

Firefighters from Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade assisted Christchurch City Council staff in assessing the situation. According to Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Alex Norris, crews were called as a precaution and focused on traffic control.

The closure prompted frustration from some motorists, leading to abuse directed at firefighters. The Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade expressed sadness over the behaviour in a social media post, particularly given recent events in the Tauranga region. They reported volunteers were subjected to abuse from drivers facing a 15-20 minute detour via Evans Pass.

The brigade also noted instances of cyclists bypassing barriers to access the closed footpath, despite being informed of the danger. “Mother nature does not care if you are running late. When a road is closed, it is done so for the safety of all road users, pedestrians, and emergency service personnel,” the post stated. They thanked those who were understanding and urged others to show more consideration in the future.

Christchurch City Council engineers have completed an assessment of Clifton Hill and determined a blocked wastewater pipe contributed to the rockfall. The council reports a low risk of further rockfalls.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Main Rd had reopened to one lane, but motorists were warned to expect significant delays. Traffic is being managed with traffic lights, manually controlled during peak hours. The council anticipates this traffic system will remain in place for several days to allow the area to dry.

Clifton Terrace is also reduced to one lane and may experience further closures for repairs.

The road closure echoes past issues with rockfall in the area. A 2km section of Sumner Road was closed following the February 22, 2011 earthquake, as documented in a 2022 report on the Sumner Road Reopening Project, which detailed rockfall mitigation and road repair efforts.
