We all know stress is bad for us,but did you know⁤ its wreaking havoc on your skin too? Beyond the occasional stress breakout, chronic stress can considerably impact your skin’s health, accelerating ageing and exacerbating existing conditions. Dr. Gizem, ⁢a skincare expert, sheds light on the surprising ways stress affects your complexion and what you ⁤can do about it.

How Stress Manifests ‍on Your Skin

Stress doesn’t just feel bad; it physically ⁤changes your body, and your skin is frequently enough the first to show it. The connection lies in cortisol, the primary stress hormone. When you’re‍ stressed, your body releases cortisol, which can trigger a ‍cascade ‍of skin problems.

“It is one of⁣ the triggers⁤ of rosacea, but not just that,” explains Dr. Gizem. “Stress can also worsen the symptoms of this⁤ condition, which include redness, formation of pimple-like bumps and‍ dryness, among ‍others.”

But rosacea ⁣isn’t the only condition aggravated by stress. “Similarly, this can trigger flare-ups of eczema and psoriasis and ⁢worsen their symptoms,” she adds. “Hives ⁤or skin rashes are another possibility, which can cause itchiness and form patches ‍on the⁤ skin. And all this is likely to do with ⁤the ⁤inflammatory response caused by⁤ stress.”

Essentially, stress throws your skin’s natural balance off kilter, leading to a variety of visible⁤ issues. It’s⁤ not just about the occasional pimple; it’s about the potential for ⁣long-term skin damage.

Sun damage & Ageing: Stress’s Long-Term Impact

While⁢ daily sunscreen⁣ is crucial for protecting against UV damage,Dr. Gizem points out that stress plays a role ‍in ⁤accelerating skin ⁢ageing. “Cortisol ⁢can negatively affect collagen production in the skin,” she says.Collagen is the protein responsible‍ for skin’s elasticity and firmness, and a decline in collagen leads to wrinkles and sagging.

Furthermore, stress induces “oxidative stress,” an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals in the body.‍ “also, stress can cause oxidative stress, an imbalance of antioxidants and free radicals in⁤ the body, which can age⁤ the skin and exacerbate the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.” Free radicals damage skin cells, contributing ⁢to premature ageing. This means that managing⁤ stress isn’t just‍ good for your mental wellbeing; it’s a vital part of any anti-ageing skincare routine.

Reclaiming⁣ Your Skin‍ (and ⁤Your calm)

So, what can you do⁢ to protect⁢ your skin‍ from⁣ the damaging effects ‍of ⁤stress? Dr. Gizem emphasizes a multi-faceted approach.

“Trying to live a⁣ life without ⁤too much stress is the remedy for this hidden ageing problem,” she advises. Fortunately, there are many accessible ways to incorporate stress-reducing practices into your daily ⁤life. “there are several ways to relax at home, including⁤ meditation, yoga, journaling, ⁤exercising and of course seeking ⁣professional help.”

However, she cautions against relying solely on skincare⁢ products. “But ⁤it’s also crucial that⁢ if you are experiencing a skin ⁤problem, you should get in touch with⁤ your skin doctor for a proper treatment ⁢plan.⁣ While there are a lot of⁣ great‍ skincare products out there, they are not the answer to every problem.”

Prioritizing your mental and emotional health is just‍ as critically important as ⁣your physical skincare routine. By managing stress, you’re not only improving your overall wellbeing, but you’re also investing in the long-term health and radiance of your⁤ skin. Take a deep breath, find what helps⁣ you relax, and remember that a calm mind truly dose ⁤contribute to a ⁤gorgeous complexion.
