Another Sun Fresh Store to Close in Kansas City Area
A Sun Fresh grocery store in Kansas City’s Northland will close its doors on February 28th, continuing a recent trend of grocery store closures in the metro area. The location at 4357 NE Chouteau Trafficway will cease operations at the end of the month, according to store director Mike Cooley.
The store has already begun discounting items by 25% as it prepares to close. Cooley noted that the Northland Sun Fresh is independently owned by an individual based in California, and this owner only operates this single location. Other Sun Fresh stores in the Kansas City area will remain open.
The building itself has a history in the grocery business, originally opening as Festivals Foods more than 25 years ago before becoming a Sun Fresh location approximately five or six years ago.
The impending closure is impacting the local community. Anne McManus, a resident who lives nearby, described the Sun Fresh as an important part of the Chaumiere neighborhood. She highlighted the store’s support for local school groups and the neighborhood association through discounted prices for fundraisers, as well as its role as a social hub for residents.
“It keeps the neighborhood alive,” McManus said.
This closure follows the shuttering of another Sun Fresh location at 31st and Prospect Streets in August, despite significant investment from the city aimed at keeping it operational. Prior to its closure, residents observed dwindling stock on the shelves. However, that East Side location is slated to reopen in the spring under new ownership, with United Market KC, LLC taking over operations.
The Kansas City area has seen several other grocery store closures in recent months. Price Chopper closed two locations in Overland Park, Kansas, at 7416 W. 119th St. And 7000 W. 75th St. The Merc Co+op closed its Kansas City, Kansas, store at 501 Minnesota Ave. At the end of 2025.
