Sunbed Wars: Tourists Trample Staff in Majorca Pool Scramble
Sunbed Scramble: Tourists Race for Prime Spots in Tenerife and mallorca
Holidaymakers are engaging in increasingly desperate tactics to secure prime sunbathing spots, with recent incidents in Tenerife and Mallorca highlighting the intense competition for poolside and beachfront loungers.
Tenerife Hotel Sees Chaotic Sunbed Dash
Footage emerged this week showing a swarm of tourists, armed with towels, descending on the ground floor of a Tenerife hotel. The eager guests were seen racing to claim the best beds by the pool, with one staff member even struggling to retrieve a dropped key card amidst the chaos. The incident occurred at a 4.5-star hotel located between the popular resorts of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, on the largest of the canary Islands.
This behaviour appears to be a recurring issue at the Spring Hotel Bitácora. A Tripadvisor review from 2023 described the sunbed situation as a “complete nightmare,” with one guest stating, “Have to rush breakfast or eat separately so you can still get a sunbed. it’s such a shame because there are so many positives.”
The hotel management responded to the review, explaining their policy: “Our pool crew work all day round checking on who’s reserving sun beds alone for more than 30 minutes, after that they notify with a note, that if on the next 15 to 20 minutes no one has been seen around the sun beds, their belongings will be put on a plastic back and saved in our lost and found so that othre client can enjoy the sun beds.”
Further evidence of this competitive spirit surfaced in 2022, when a clip shared on TikTok showed holidaymakers queuing for up to 90 minutes before dawn to gain access to the sunbeds.
Mallorca Beach Faces Similar Sunbed Scramble
The “sunbed wars” are not confined to Tenerife. In Mallorca, at Cala Agulla near Cala Rajada, a German tourist captured footage last week showing an almost entirely empty beach at 9 am, with nearly all sunbeds already ”reserved” by towels.
Local residents have expressed growing frustration, noting that this spectacle is becoming a common sight, particularly during the peak summer season, as tourists vie for the most desirable beachfront locations. Given the proximity of numerous hotels to Cala Agulla, local media suggests that these early-morning towel reservations are predominantly made by tourists. The video’s author even claimed that rental companies had replaced towels that had been blown away by strong winds, further illustrating the lengths some go to secure their spot.
