Sundar Pichai: Agentic 2026, Phones Over Glasses
Google’s AI Ambitions: Agentic Experiences and XR Glasses Take Center Stage
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently offered a glimpse into Google’s future during the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call, highlighting significant advancements in AI, especially with the gemini 2.5 series, and reaffirming the company’s commitment to Extended Reality (XR) glasses. The overarching theme is a strategic pivot towards “agentic experiences,” a concept Pichai emphasized as the company’s primary investment focus.
Pichai revealed that the Gemini 2.5 Pro model was engineered with agentic capabilities at its core, signaling a clear direction for Google’s AI development. While specific details remain under wraps, Pichai hinted at “exciting progress, including in the models we haven’t fully released yet,” suggesting further breakthroughs are on the horizon. The company is actively addressing challenges related to reliability, latency, and cost, with Pichai anticipating that “2026 to be the year in which people kind of use agentic experiences more broadly.”
Google has already begun integrating agentic features into its product ecosystem. Recent launches include Deep Research within Gemini and AI-powered business calling in Google Search. For AI Ultra subscribers, Project Mariner is available, and at Google I/O, an “Agent Mode” for the Gemini app was announced. These initiatives underscore Google’s commitment to making AI more proactive and helpful in users’ daily lives.
Beyond AI, Pichai also addressed Google’s investment in XR glasses, expressing considerable enthusiasm. Though, he tempered expectations by noting that smartphones will likely remain the primary consumer device for the next “two to three years, at least.” This cautious outlook is consistent with Google’s current strategy, which prioritizes Android XR headsets. The company has forged partnerships with fashion brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop stylish XR glasses, and is collaborating with Samsung on a software and reference hardware platform to foster an XR ecosystem. Developers are expected to gain access to this platform later this year, likely with the release of a new emulator.
In a separate reflection posted on X, Pichai commemorated the tenth anniversary of Alphabet’s announcement and his appointment as Google CEO. He drew a stark comparison between Alphabet’s revenue in 2015 ($75 billion) and the combined annual run rate of YouTube and Cloud alone at the end of 2024 ($110 billion), illustrating the company’s significant growth.
Looking ahead, Pichai expressed optimism about the next decade, particularly regarding progress towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). He reiterated Google’s dedication to ensuring these advancements are “beneficial for everyone.” The company’s strategic focus on agentic AI and its continued investment in XR technologies signal a clear vision for a more integrated and intelligent future, with Pichai emphasizing a commitment to responsible innovation.
