The Dallas Cowboys’ Organized Team Activities (OTAs) in 2026 have drawn significant attention due to notable improvements in defensive strategies, according to multiple sports analysts. The team’s emphasis on reshaping its defensive line and secondary has been highlighted as a key development during the offseason workouts, which began in late May. These efforts come after a 2025 season that saw the Cowboys struggle with consistent pass coverage and run-stopping ability, prompting coaching staff to implement changes ahead of the 2026 NFL draft and regular season.

According to ESPN, head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the media on June 8, stating, “We’re focusing on fundamentals and adaptability. The players are buying into the new systems, and that’s the first step.” McCarthy’s comments were echoed by defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who emphasized the team’s shift toward a more aggressive, zone-based scheme. “We’re not just reacting anymore,” Nolan said in a June 9 interview with CBS Sports. “The players are understanding how to read offensive formations and adjust in real time.”

The OTAs have also featured increased participation from rookie defensive linemen selected in the 2026 draft, including first-round pick Jabari Smith Jr. and second-round pick D’Eriq King. Smith, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound pass-rusher, has been working extensively with the starting unit, while King, a former quarterback turned defensive back, has drawn praise for his versatility. “D’Eriq’s athleticism and football IQ are already making an impact,” said linebacker Leighton Vander Esch in a June 7 statement to The Dallas Morning News. “He’s got the potential to be a difference-maker.”

Defensive tackle Randy Gregory, who returned to the team in a reserve role after missing most of the 2025 season due to injury, has also been a focal point of the OTAs. Gregory’s presence in practice has been described as “energizing” by assistant coach Kris Richard, who noted, “Randy’s experience and work ethic are setting a tone for the younger players.” Gregory, 31, has not yet been medically cleared for full-contact drills but has participated in walkthroughs and strength training.

The Cowboys’ defensive improvements contrast with the team’s 2025 performance, which ranked 24th in the league against the pass and 19th against the run, according to Pro Football Reference. The 2026 OTAs have been viewed as a critical test for the revamped unit, with analysts noting the importance of continuity in the secondary. “If they can keep the same core group healthy, there’s reason to believe they’ll be more competitive,” said NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah in a June 10 podcast.

The team’s offensive line, meanwhile, has remained relatively stable, with all five starting positions returning from 2025. Quarterback Dak Prescott, who led the league in passing yards in 2025, has been working closely with the new receivers, including star wideout CeeDee Lamb and rookie Jalen Tolbert. “Dak’s been in great shape, and his chemistry with the receivers is solid,” said offensive coordinator Kippy Allen in a June 6 press conference.

The Cowboys’ 2026 season opens on September 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team’s training camp is set to begin on July 28 in Frisco, Texas, with the first preseason game scheduled for August 11 against the Arizona Cardinals.
