As Disneyland grew, so did the need for better accommodations. In 1962, an 11-story tower transformed the Disneyland hotel into a more prominent landmark, then the tallest structure in Orange County. During the 1960s and 70s, Disneyland attracted many Japanese tourists. The Emerald of Anaheim, a 15-story hotel, opened in May 1984, built by the tokyu Group, catering specifically to this market.
