Rising Hospitalizations Signal Severe Flu season
England’s National Health Service (NHS) is bracing for a perhaps severe flu season, warning of a “Worst Case Scenario December” according to RTL News. Hospital admissions due to influenza are substantially higher than in previous years for this time of year. Last week alone, 2,660 people in England were hospitalized with the flu.
This surge is placing considerable strain on the NHS, already facing challenges from winter pressures and ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flu Virus Variability and Vaccine Challenges
The influenza virus is notoriously adaptable, constantly evolving into numerous variants. Immunologist Ger Rijkers explains to RTL News that predicting the dominant strain each season is a complex undertaking. “It is never easy to predict which variant will prevail in a season. Flu occurs all over the world, especially in asia it starts earlier, in the spring.”
The annual flu vaccine is formulated based on predictions of circulating strains, frequently enough informed by surveillance data from regions like Asia where flu activity begins earlier in the year. However, Rijkers notes that these predictions aren’t always accurate. “Then the vaccine does not ideally fit the variant that predominates. That is what is happening now.”
H3N2 Mutation and Vaccine Effectiveness
The current surge is driven by a mutation of the H3N2 influenza strain. This mismatch between the vaccine and the circulating virus is reducing vaccine effectiveness, meaning more people are becoming infected despite vaccination. While the vaccine still offers some protection, its ability to prevent infection is diminished.
The H3N2 strain is known for its ability to mutate rapidly, making it a particularly challenging target for vaccine progress. This is not the first time a mismatch has occurred, but the current situation is particularly concerning due to the high number of cases.
Flu Vaccination: A Layer of Protection
Despite the vaccine mismatch, health officials continue to recommend vaccination as the best available protection against influenza. Even if the vaccine doesn’t perfectly match the circulating strain, it can still reduce the severity of illness and the risk of complications, such as pneumonia.
