Global Surge in “Super Flu” Cases, Primarily H3N2 strain

Health organizations are reporting a sharp increase in influenza cases worldwide, particularly a new variant of the H3N2 virus dubbed “super flu.” The World Health Organization (WHO) announced last week that cases are rising in numerous countries, especially across Europe.
While not a novel virus, this new strain doesn’t exhibit a substantially increased disease severity compared to typical seasonal influenza, it is spreading with greater intensity than previous strains.
Increased Cases and Severity
As of mid-November, the “super flu” – a variant of the H3N2 influenza A virus – was responsible for over half of all flu cases in the united States, according to the New York Post. Dr. Amanda Kravetz noted that case numbers are higher than expected for this time of year.
Experts are observing a concerning difference between this strain and ordinary influenza: symptoms are vrey severe, appear rapidly, and are highly contagious, leading to fast spread within communities.
Potential Complications and Mortality
Beyond the severity of symptoms, there’s increased concern about hospitalization rates. Untreated infections with this new strain can lead to serious complications, including ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia, and even death.
As of December 13th, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had recorded 4.6 million influenza cases and 1,900 influenza-related deaths.
Strain on Healthcare systems
The UK’s British Health Services Authority is preparing for a potentially harsh winter season due to increasing pressure on clinics and hospitals, exacerbated by the influenza season starting two to three weeks earlier than usual.
In France, influenza activity is rapidly increasing, particularly in urban areas, with rising cases across all age groups and a surge in emergency department visits. Spain has seen hospital admissions double within a week, while Romania and Hungary are experiencing notable increases in influenza cases.
Vaccine Effectiveness
Early data from the UK, as reported by the WHO, indicates that the influenza vaccine reduces the risk of severe symptoms from the H3N2 or “superflu” strain, although it may not prevent infection altogether.
