As “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” hits theaters, a bit of Hollywood history resurfaces: the near-casting of Tom Selleck as the iconic Indiana Jones. The story intertwines with the original “Magnum PI,” a series that debuted in December 1980 and ran for eight seasons. A “Magnum PI” remake, which premiered Sept.24, 2018, was recently canceled by NBC after a five-season run.
Back in 1980, Selleck was a strong contender for Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Though, his commitment to the “Magnum PI” pilot ultimately cost him the role, which went to Harrison Ford. Ford wasn’t George Lucas’s first choice; Steven Spielberg had to persuade Lucas after being impressed with Ford’s performance in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Casting director Mike Fenton auditioned numerous actors, including steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray. Initially, Spielberg and Lucas were unsure if “Raiders” would be a sincere tribute to the serials of the 1930s and 1940s or a spoof.
ultimately, the choice narrowed to Jeff Bridges and Selleck. Bridges, eager for a commercial hit after “Heaven’s Gate,” was willing to sign a contract for multiple “Indiana Jones” films at a reduced rate. Though, Marcia Lucas advocated for Selleck, recognizing his potential star power.

With selleck cast as Indiana Jones, CBS decided to move forward with “Magnum PI.” bridges, after missing out on ”Raiders of the Lost Ark,” starred in Disney’s “TRON,” released July 9, 1982.
Footage of Selleck’s audition with Sean Young is available online, showcasing what could have been. The decision to cast Selleck led CBS to pick up “Magnum PI,” changing the trajectory of both franchises.
