‘superman’ Soars with Early Praise: A Return to Comic Book Roots
Table of Contents
James Gunn’s Superman is generating important buzz with early reviews pouring in, signaling a potential turning point for the DC Universe. A refreshing departure from the darker tones of recent superhero films, the movie is being lauded for it’s fun, action-packed approach and faithful adaptation of the source material. Here’s a breakdown of what critics are saying ahead of its July 11th theatrical release.
A Breath of Fresh Air for the DC Universe
For years, DC films have struggled to find consistent footing, frequently enough weighed down by grim seriousness. Superman appears to be a deliberate course correction. Many reviewers highlight the film’s joyful energy and its commitment to capturing the spirit of the classic comic books.
“A relief from past DC operas,” notes Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411. “Past few Superman movies I dreaded they were so serious. This makes you feel like you’re enjoying a comic book. Kudos to James Gunn. Again. Nothing woke, no politics. But superman confronts his origin story in a triumphant way.”
This sentiment is echoed by Brandon Davis of Phase Hero, who calls the film “a triumph for the new DC Universe. It’s a comic book brought to beautiful live-action life, brimming with hope & fulfillment. It actually elicited tears of joy from me. It’s a Superman for everyone.”
Core Cast Delivers Stellar Performances
David Corenswet’s portrayal of superman/Clark Kent is receiving widespread acclaim. Critics consistently praise his embodiment of the iconic character, suggesting he was “born for Superman & Clark Kent” (Davis). Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is also earning positive attention, described as a “spiky” and compelling counterpart to Corenswet’s Superman (Howell). However, the supporting cast isn’t being overlooked. Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Lex Luthor is generating excitement, with Friedman describing Hoult as a “top notch scene chewer.” And, unexpectedly, Krypto the Superdog is stealing hearts. Molly Freeman of Screenrant declares, “Krypto is THE BEST dog.”
A Return to Fun and Action
Beyond the performances, reviewers emphasize the film’s sheer entertainment value. Gunn’s direction is credited with delivering a ”fun-filled, action-packed, quintessential summer blockbuster” (Freeman). Brandon Lewis of Geek Vibes Nation agrees, stating the film is ”the shot of adrenaline the superhero movie genre needs.”
Hoai-Tran Bui of Inverse likens the experience to a “live-action Saturday morning cartoon,” praising the cast as “literally perfect.” Grace Randolph of Beyond the Trailer goes even further, calling it “the BEST #Superman movie to date.”
Not Without Its Critics
While overwhelmingly positive, not all reviews are glowing. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star offers a dissenting opinion, stating it’s “not the super start to the DC Universe everybody had been hoping for.” Howell critiques the storytelling, finding Gunn more adept at spectacle than narrative, and suggests Corenswet might be better suited for a different type of role. He also notes that Rachel Brosnahan’s lois Lane is “spiky” and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is ”more obnoxious than villainous.”
Though, even with this critique, the overall consensus points to a successful and exciting new chapter for the DC Universe. The film’s focus on hope, heroism, and a genuine love for the source material appears to be resonating with early viewers.
Full reviews will be available online from 3pm US-EST on Tuesday. Superman opens in cinemas on July 11th.
