Superman’s Red Trunks: James Gunn and David Corenswet’s Debate
Superman‘s Red Trunks return: James Gunn Explains the Iconic Choice
Hollywood, CA – The internet exploded when photos of David Corenswet on the set of the new Superman film leaked, revealing the return of the Man of Steel’s iconic red trunks. This marked a departure from Zack Snyder’s vision for superman, where Henry Cavill’s version ditched the classic look. Now, director James gunn is shedding light on the decision to bring back the red briefs.
In a recent interview,Gunn revealed that he initially agreed with the idea of removing the trunks, but a conversation with Corenswet changed his mind. The actor, Gunn explained, felt strongly that Superman should be approachable and embody hope, especially for children.
“We tried all different versions, and we did tests with the trunks and without the trunks,” Gunn shared. “And one of the things that David said was that Superman wants kids to not be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He has incredible powers. He shoots lasers from his eyes… He’s very powerful and could be seen as scary. He wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity.”
Corenswet’s reasoning resonated with Gunn. “He dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that makes people not afraid of him, that shows hope and shows positivity. And that really clicked for me. I think trying to pretend that the Superman costume doesn’t have a certain silliness to it, trying to make it look serious, is kind of ridiculous because he is a superhero,” Gunn added.
Fans will finally see Corenswet’s red-trunked Superman in action when Warner Bros. releases the first trailer on december 19th. While some may find the costume nostalgic, Gunn assures fans that the film won’t be a lighthearted comedy like his “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.
“It’s funny, but it’s definitely not like ‘Suicide squad’ or ‘Guardians,'” he clarified. “There’s a lot of humor in it.People like Rachel (Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane) are very funny, and David is (funny too), so there’s humor in it, but it’s trying to create something that’s grounded, but also a world that’s very fantastical. It’s fantasy, taking from things like ‘Game of Thrones,’ which is a universe where superheroes actually exist. What would that be like? There’s magic there that can’t be denied.”
