Supreme Court Orders Punjab to Safeguard Health of Fasting Farmer Leader

Indian Farmer’s Health Deteriorates Sharply During Hunger Strike, Supreme Court intervenes

New Delhi, India – A 70-year-old indian farmer leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, is in critical condition after 24 days of a hunger strike demanding government action on farmers’ rights. The Supreme Court of India has intervened, directing the Punjab government to ensure Dallewal’s safety and well-being.

Dallewal, a cancer patient, began his hunger strike on November 26th at the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana. He is protesting alongside other farmers, demanding a legally guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for their crops. Doctors treating Dallewal have expressed grave concerns about his health. He reportedly lost consciousness and fainted for several minutes on Thursday, prompting the Supreme Court to take immediate action.

“He requires hospitalization. It’s the responsibility of the State of Punjab to ensure the stable health condition of Dallewal,” the Supreme court stated in its order.

The court has asked the Punjab government to shift Dallewal to a makeshift hospital near the protest site for round-the-clock monitoring. The matter will be reviewed again on January 2nd.

While the Punjab government claims Dallewal has cooperated with medical tests, doctors say his condition is deteriorating rapidly. He is at risk of cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure due to prolonged fasting.

Dallewal’s case has drawn attention from political leaders, with some urging the government to accept the farmers’ demands and end the hunger strike.”The government should instantly accept the farmers’ demand for MSP guarantee and end Dallewal ji’s hunger strike,” said Deepender Hooda, a Haryana Congress MP.

The farmers’ protest, which began in February, has seen clashes with security forces who used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstrators.

This situation highlights the ongoing tensions between farmers and the Indian government over agricultural policies and the plight of farmers struggling for fair prices and economic security.

ND3 News: Hunger Strike Showdown: Expert Weighs in on Dallewal’s Critical Condition

ND3: Mr.Sharma, thank you for joining us today. The situation surrounding farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike is dire. He’s been protesting for 24 days, and his health is rapidly deteriorating. Can you explain the potential risks involved in such a prolonged fast?

Dr. Sharma: This situation is extremely concerning. Mr. Dallewal is already a 70-year-old cancer patient, making him especially vulnerable. Prolonged fasting can lead to a cascade of serious health problems. We’re talking about severe electrolyte imbalances, malnutrition, organ damage, and even cardiac arrest.

ND3: ( [3] ) states that doctors have expressed grave concerns and specifically mention the risk of cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure. Would you say this assessment is accurate?

Dr. Sharma: absolutely.Given the duration of the fast and Mr. Dallewal’s pre-existing conditions, those are very real and serious dangers. The Supreme Court intervention is crucial here.

ND3: Now,the Supreme Court has ordered the Punjab government to ensure Mr. Dallewal’s safety and move him to a makeshift hospital. Do you think this is the right course of action?

Dr. Sharma: It’s absolutely necessary. He needs round-the-clock medical monitoring and intervention. A hospital setting, even a makeshift one, is the only place where he can receive the critical care he needs to survive.
