Supreme Court Reinstates NAB Reforms, Declares Amendments Constitutional
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has allowed the government’s appeal and reinstated the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) reforms. A 5-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, restored the NAB amendments, declaring the decision of the NAB amendments case as null and void.
In the judgment, pronounced on behalf of Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, it was stated that PTI founder Imran Khan failed to prove that the NAB amendments were unconstitutional. This decision comes after a 3-member bench, headed by former Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Atta Bandial, had previously declared the NAB amendments null and void.
The federal government had filed an appeal within the court against the nullification of the NAB amendments, leading to the formation of a larger 5-member bench, headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan. This bench comprised Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, Justice Aminuddin, Justice Jamal Mandukhel, Justice Athar Manullah, and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi.
After five hearings, the 5-member bench reserved its decision on the appeals against the annulment of the NAB amendments. The reinstatement of the NAB reforms is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s anti-corruption laws.
