Supreme Court Showdown: Senedd Commission Gives Green Light to Government Nominees Amid Audio Case Controversy
The three nominees for the Supreme Court spoke this Monday at the Senate’s Constitution Commission, together with Minister Luis Cordero.
Supreme Court Nominees Approved by Senate Constitution Commission
The Senate Constitution Commission approved the names of the three Government nominees to join the Supreme Court in the midst of the repercussions caused by the Audition Case.
The Minister of Justice, Luis Cordero, presented the Executive Committee’s candidates to the country’s highest court, explaining the reasons for supporting Jessica González Troncoso, Mireya López Miranda, and Jorge Pizarro Astudillo.
After the Minister’s words, each candidate presented a summary of their professional career to the members of the commission, making known their position regarding the operation of the Supreme Court and different aspects of jurisprudence in the country, in addition to providing their vision on the crisis that is being experienced in the Judiciary as a result of the revelations that came to light in the Hearing Case.
Meet the Supreme Court Nominees
Who are the three nominated by the government to the Supreme Court?
The first candidate to present before the commission was Minister and Court of Appeals of Santiago, Jessica González, who graduated from the University of Concepción.
In 1988, she joined the Judiciary and during her professional career, she served as deputy and then as head of the 28th Civil Court of Santiago.
Later, she was rapporteur of the Court of Appeals of Santiago, she also became a judge of the 12th Civil Court of Santiago, and, later, as Supreme Court Reporter.
Next, Mireya López, who is a lawyer, graduated from Valparaiso University, and is also part of the Court of Appeal, presented her career.
In 1995, she started as rapporteur for the Court of Appeals of San Miguel, and In 2000, she became a judge in the 1st Civil Court of San Miguel.
Seven years later, she began her work as a Supreme Court rapporteur, and In 2012, she became minister of the Court of Appeals of Santiago.
Jorge Pizarro, who is a lawyer, graduated from the University of Chile, revealed his career.
He was a secretary in the Court of Letters of Vicuña, between 1988 and 1990, after that, he took over as secretary of the Third Court of Letters of La Serena, and, in 1990, as judge of the Third Court of Letters of Coquimbo.
Starting in 2000, and for 13 years, he served as judge of the La Serena Oral Criminal Trial Court.
Since 2013, Jorge Pizarro Astudillo has served as pastor of the Court of Appeals of Puerto Montt in the Los Lagos Region.
