Surajkund Fair Tragedy: Police Inspector Dies, 13 Injured in Swing Collapse

Faridabad, Haryana – A tragic accident at the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday, February 7, 2026, resulted in the death of a police inspector and injuries to at least 13 people when a fairground swing collapsed. The incident occurred as visitors were enjoying the popular “Tsunami” swing ride, triggering panic and raising serious questions about safety protocols at the annual cultural event.

The deceased has been identified as Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the fair. According to reports, he rushed to assist those injured in the collapse and sustained critical injuries during the rescue operation. He was subsequently transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.

The swing malfunctioned and broke down suddenly while several visitors were riding it, occurring between approximately 6:15 pm and 7:00 pm. Witnesses described a loud crash as the structure came down, sending onlookers into a state of alarm. Authorities confirmed that around a dozen to fifteen people were on the ride at the time of the incident.

At least 13 individuals sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to more serious trauma. All injured parties were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Two other police personnel were also among those injured and are receiving care.

Senior district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, the Managing Director of Tourism, and senior police officers, immediately arrived at the scene following the accident. The affected area has been cordoned off with barricades to prevent further incidents and to facilitate investigations.

“An accident occurred after a swing collapsed at the mela. We are currently assessing the situation. Some people were injured and have been shifted to the hospital, where they are undergoing treatment,” stated DCP Maqsood Ahmed. “A proper investigation will be conducted, and action will be taken against the swing operator. The exact number of injured is being ascertained.”

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed his condolences over the incident, stating, “I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of the person who lost their life in this incident.” He added that directions have been issued to concerned authorities to ensure appropriate and immediate treatment for the injured.

This incident follows an earlier, separate incident at the fair where a gate at the food court reportedly collapsed due to strong winds. Authorities are investigating both incidents to determine the causes and prevent future occurrences.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is a significant cultural event attracting visitors from across India and internationally. The tragedy has cast a shadow over the festival and prompted calls for a thorough review of safety measures at the fair.
