The re-release marks the 35th anniversary of the film’s original theatrical debut. Tickets are currently available through participating cinemas and Fathom Entertainment.

4K Restoration and New Featurette

The anniversary screenings include a brand-new 4K restoration designed to bring the film’s surfing and skydiving sequences back to the big screen. Shannah Miller, Vice President of Marketing for Fathom Entertainment, stated in the announcement that the restored version provides the "devoted following exactly what they've been asking for".

The release also features an exclusive introduction from Matt Archbold, a San Clemente surfer who served as the surf double for Patrick Swayze. Archbold coached several cast members during production, including Swayze, Keanu Reeves, and Anthony Kiedis.

In a new featurette accompanying the release, Archbold discusses behind-the-scenes stories from the production and reflects on the film’s themes of risk, freedom, and surfing, according to the announcement.

Plot and Cast Details

Directed by Academy Award winner Kathryn Bigelow, the film follows Johnny Utah, an FBI agent played by Keanu Reeves. Utah is tasked with infiltrating the Southern California surf scene to investigate a group of bank robbers known as the "Ex-Presidents."

Plot and Cast Details

The plot centers on Utah’s relationship with Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze, as the agent’s duty to the law conflicts with his immersion in a world of living without limits. The cast also features Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros, and Anthony Kiedis, who played a character named Tone.

Industry Collaborations and Support

The theatrical return is supported by a series of collaborations across the action sports and surf industries. Participating organizations and outlets providing special editorial content include:
