Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for 80% of all lung cancers and is characterized as a disease of advanced age. As life expectancy increases, a growing number of adults aged 80 years and older are being diagnosed with early-stage versions of the disease.

Historically, advanced age has served as a limiting factor in determining whether a patient is eligible for surgery to treat early-stage NSCLC. Many patients in this age group have been excluded from clinical trials and lung cancer screening programs.

A prospective cohort study published in The Lancet Regional Health Americas has examined the outcomes, survival, and quality of life for patients aged 80 and older undergoing surgery for early-stage NSCLC.

Complementing this research, a study from Mount Sinai followed 884 patients with early-stage lung cancer, which included a subset of 114 individuals aged 80 or older. The researchers concluded that lung cancer surgery is safe for numerous patients in this age bracket.

Further research published in Langenbecks Arch Surg on February 26, 2026, analyzed the feasibility of surgery with curative intent in old and very old patients. This analysis was based on over a decade of experience from a certified lung cancer center.
