Background: Recent Political Context

The Turkish political landscape has been marked by meaningful events, including the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul from the Republican people’s Party (CHP). This event,and others,have prompted analysis of potential shifts in voter preferences,notably among supporters of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (DEM Party).

Survey Methodology

Ankara Research and Consultancy conducted a survey between October 16-19, 2023, wiht 2004 participants across 28 provinces in Turkey. The research aimed to gauge perceptions of the DEM Party’s political alignment among voters of various parties.

Perceptions of the DEM Party’s Alignment

The survey explored which political alliance – the People’s Alliance (led by the AKP) or the opposition – respondents believed the DEM Party was closest to. results indicate a growing perception that the DEM Party is aligning with the People’s Alliance, while the perception of alignment with the opposition is decreasing.

Here’s a breakdown of how voters from different parties perceive the DEM Party:

• AKP Voters: 60.2% believe the DEM Party is close to the opposition.
• CHP Voters: 70.4% believe the DEM Party is close to the People’s Alliance.
• MHP Voters: 76.3% state the DEM Party is close to the opposition.
• İYİ Party Voters: 87% state the DEM Party is close to the People’s Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı).

What DEM Party Voters Think

Despite a perceived shift in the DEM Party’s actions towards the People’s Alliance, a majority of DEM Party voters still identify with the opposition. The survey found that 65.4% of DEM voters believe their party is close to the opposition, while 18.5% believe it is indeed close to the People’s alliance.

Notably, the survey highlights a disconnect between the DEM Party base’s awareness of engagement with the People’s Alliance and a feeling of genuine closeness to that alliance. This suggests a pragmatic engagement rather than a fundamental ideological shift.
