Surviving the Gaming Industry’s Dark Winter: Former Sony President’s Unconventional Advice – Drive for Uber or Soak Up the Sun for a Year
Former PlayStation Boss Chris Deering Sparks Controversy with Comments on Game Industry Layoffs
The last 1 or 2 years are known as the cold winter of the game industry, many big games have suffered mass layoffs, ranging from dozens to thousands, and as a result many game developers have lost their jobs. However, Chris Deering, who was the president of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) in Europe, recently suggested these developers to “go on a beach vacation for 1 year” or “get on Uber” until the market conditions improve.
Chris Deering recently explained on the My Perfect Console podcast that the current gaming industry is a bit of a layoff cycle, and given the impact of fluctuating consumer spending and declining game sales, some layoffs are inevitable in order to continue investing in the next game. Deering, on the other hand, suggests that developers affected by layoffs do something to prop up the market until it recovers: “Go get an Uber or do something else, find a cheap place to stay, and go on a beach vacation for a year.”

This comment quickly sparked controversy on the Internet: “For these bosses, employees are just a tool. If they don’t need you, they will abandon you.” Go drive an Uber every day and at the same time familiarize yourself with your professional skills every day.”, “Where do you mean a cheap place to live? Are you homeless on the streets?”, “Great, people at this level don’t have to pay for failure and can still succeed? With an income of a million dollars, it’s no wonder they can say things like that.” “Top management will never be cut or fired. It will always be the lower employees who will be fired.” “Only those at the top can say that Bar…”
