Targeted Attack Caught on Camera
Thompson was fatally shot at close range around 6:44 a.m. on Wednesday outside the New York Hilton Midtown, where UnitedHealthcare was hosting an investor conference. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Surveillance footage captured the suspect, dressed in a dark hooded sweatshirt and backpack, fleeing the scene on a bicycle through Central Park towards the Upper West Side. “It appears he planned his movements with precision,” New York City mayor Eric Adams told ABC News on Sunday. “But law enforcement is on the right track. As I say, the net is closing and closing. This was an extremely challenging investigation. A person fully masked. The amount of detective work that went into piecing this together, we feel we’re getting closer.”
The FBI is assisting in the nationwide search.
Leads in Georgia
Earlier this week,NYPD detectives traveled to Georgia following a lead: investigators believe the suspect arrived in New York City on November 24th on a bus originating in Atlanta. His whereabouts before Atlanta remain unclear. Upon arriving in New York, he reportedly stayed at a hostel on Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan.
Over the weekend, the NYPD released new images of the suspect inside a taxi, peering through the plastic partition separating the driver from the backseat. He was wearing a mask and appeared to have changed his sweatshirt.
