A suspected case of chikungunya in Reggio Emilia has triggered an overnight disinfection campaign in two neighborhoods, with authorities ordering residents to keep windows closed and halt air-exchange systems to prevent further spread. The outbreak response follows a pattern seen in other Italian regions this year, where localized arbovirus cases have prompted rapid containment measures.

According to the Gazzetta di Reggio and Reggionline, the disinfection operation began late June 24 in Mancasale and Pappagnocca districts after a confirmed or highly suspicious case was identified. The Emilia-Romagna regional health authority (Azienda USL) confirmed the operation to local media, stating that adulticide treatments—spraying insecticides to kill adult mosquitoes—would continue through June 25. Residents were instructed to avoid opening windows and to disable air-conditioning units with outdoor vents, as Gazzetta di Reggio reported.

The measures reflect Italy’s escalating arbovirus alert this year. Just last week, Ravenna’s health authority reported a suspected dengue case that later tested negative, while Il Resto del Carlino noted similar disinfection campaigns in Bologna’s city center. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies chikungunya—a mosquito-borne virus causing fever, joint pain, and rash—as a public health priority in Europe, with cases increasingly detected in Italy since 2023.

Why is chikungunya spreading in Italy?
The virus thrives in Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, which have expanded their range across Italy due to warmer winters and urbanization. According to the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), chikungunya cases in Italy surged from 12 in 2022 to 1,200 in 2023, with Emilia-Romagna among the hardest-hit regions. The ISS attributes this to both imported cases and local transmission.

What happens next in Reggio Emilia?
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspected case is travel-related or locally acquired. The USL will conduct further testing to determine the virus strain and assess transmission risk. Meanwhile, residents in treated areas are advised to report any fever or joint pain within 14 days of the operation to their local health center.

How does this compare to other Italian outbreaks?
While Reggio Emilia’s response mirrors recent actions in Ravenna and Bologna, the scale differs. Ravenna’s suspected dengue case led to localized spraying, whereas Reggio’s operation covers two entire neighborhoods. The ISS warns that without aggressive mosquito control, Italy could see outbreaks comparable to 2023’s record levels.

What can residents do to protect themselves?
The USL recommends eliminating stagnant water—mosquito breeding grounds—and using repellents containing DEET or icaridin. Authorities emphasize that disinfection alone is insufficient; sustained community efforts are critical to curb transmission.
