initial Arrest and Release
Seven men arrested Wednesday morning following a high-speed chase and the finding of a meaningful weapons cache were released Friday by the Court of Portimão,according to reporting by Jornal de Notícias (JN). The instructional judge determined there was insufficient evidence to continue holding the individuals.
The Public Prosecution Service did not request any coercive measures, despite the fact that three of the men were in Portugal illegally, Jornal de Notícias reported.
The Seizure and Weapons Found
The arrests occurred after the Coastal Control Detachment of Sines detected a speedboat approaching the coastline at high speed. Military personnel observed vehicle and pedestrian movement in the area, prompting a GNR (National Republican Guard) intervention.
During the operation, authorities seized an “arsenal of war,” including four automatic shotguns and several rifles – specifically, Kalashnikov (AK-47), M4, CETME-L, and AR-15/M4 models. The CETME-L rifle had been stolen from the Spanish army, according to Jornal de Notícias.
Details of the Arrest
The individuals attempted to evade capture, fleeing towards a rocky area and in a vehicle, but were apprehended by the GNR. “It was a bustle,” said Miguel Mateus, commander of the Costeiro de Sines, to Jornal de Notícias. “The individuals realized our arrival and ended the escape attached to a rocky area, which made our action a little challenging. There was also an attempted escape in a car, but was locked.”
Three of the seven men were identified as Moroccan nationals residing in Portugal irregularly.
Escape by Sea
A quick speedboat used in the operation managed to escape and was not intercepted or seized. It was found leaning against a fishing port,Jornal de Notícias reported.
