Federal authorities and San Francisco police have arrested a 20-year-old suspect following a targeted attack on the San Francisco residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on April 10, 2026.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama of Texas, is facing charges of attempted murder and attempted arson. According to a criminal complaint filed by the FBI on April 13, 2026, Moreno-Gama allegedly threw an incendiary device at Altman’s home before attempting to attack the OpenAI corporate headquarters.

Details of the Attack and Arrest

The incident began around 4:00 am on April 10, 2026, when the suspect threw a Molotov cocktail at the residence, which is located on Lombard Street. The San Francisco Police Department reported that the device caused a fire at one of the exterior gates before the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Details of the Attack and Arrest

Following the attack at the home, Moreno-Gama allegedly traveled to OpenAI’s San Francisco offices. Authorities state he struck the glass doors of the headquarters with a chair and expressed a desire to burn it down and kill anyone inside.

Moreno-Gama was arrested outside the OpenAI offices on the night of the incident. No injuries were reported as a result of the attacks.

FBI Investigation and Evidence

Matt Cobo, the FBI San Francisco acting special agent in charge, described the attack during a news conference on April 13, 2026, as planned, targeted and extremely serious.

The Department of Justice revealed that Moreno-Gama was in possession of a three-part document advocating against artificial intelligence. The first section of the document, titled Your Last Warning, advocated for the killing of AI company CEOs and their investors.

During the investigation, authorities recovered several items from the suspect, including:

  • Additional incendiary devices
  • A jug of kerosene
  • A blue lighter

The FBI also conducted a raid on the suspect’s home in Texas as part of the ongoing investigation.

Corporate Response and Security Context

A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed the incidents and stated that the company is assisting law enforcement with the investigation. The spokesperson expressed appreciation for the rapid response from the San Francisco Police Department.

In a personal blog post published on the evening of April 10, 2026, Sam Altman shared a photograph of his husband and baby. Altman stated he did so in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me.

This incident follows a history of security challenges for the company. In November, OpenAI headquarters went on lockdown after a man threatened to visit several San Francisco offices to murder people. Protesters have regularly demonstrated outside the company’s building in the Mission Bay neighborhood throughout 2026.

The attacks highlight a growing trend of public anger directed toward the AI sector, as noted in reporting by Barron’s regarding the targeting of OpenAI leadership.
