Google Maps Updates Focus on Sustainable Transportation Role in Europe
Updated June 18, 2025
Google Maps is introducing updates across Europe to promote more sustainable transportation choices. These changes aim to assist users in making informed decisions for summer travel, daily commutes, and errands.
One key feature suggests alternative routes. Using artificial intelligence, Google Maps predicts when walking or public transit will take about the same time as driving. The app then recommends these routes to users. This feature, already available in over 60 cities, has reportedly helped users avoid millions of car trips.Expansion is planned for Copenhagen, Stockholm, Warsaw, and other cities.
For cyclists, Google Maps now provides more detailed route details in several cities. Through partnerships with local governments and public authorities, users in Hamburg, Madrid, Barcelona, milan, Rome, Zurich, Budapest, Vienna, and Brussels can view cycling lane locations, traffic conditions, and hill inclines. This enhanced cycling experience is expanding to 17 new cities, including nine in Europe, covering a total of 125,000 kilometers of bike lanes.
What’s next
Google plans to continue expanding these sustainable transportation features to more cities and regions in the future, further emphasizing the critically important role of eco-pleasant travel options.
