Upon entering As-suwayda,the signs of conflict were undeniable. Burned-out shops, damaged buildings, and vehicles destroyed by tanks painted a grim picture of the fierce battles that have recently engulfed the city. Initial reports indicate a violent confrontation between Druze and Bedouin fighters, prompting the Syrian government to intervene for the first time to attempt to broker a ceasefire.
While government forces have reportedly regained control of several Druze villages in the As-Suwayda Governorate, the city itself, home to over 70,000 people, remains under full Druze control.

Sitting with her aunt, Hala recounted a harrowing experience: gunmen opened fire on her head while she was hiding in a wardrobe inside her home. The young girl, who appears to have lost an eye, is tragically unaware that her parents did not survive the attack. Her story is a stark reminder of the devastating human toll of the ongoing conflict.

Earlier this week, Raed Al-Saleh, the Syrian Minister of Disaster Management and Emergency Response, assured us that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted into any allegations of atrocities, nonetheless of the parties involved. This commitment to accountability, however, faces the meaningful hurdle of the current restrictions on access and the difficulty in independently verifying the claims amidst the ongoing turmoil.
